BLOOMSBURG – California Baptist University wrestling opened 2022 with a doubleheader dual versus Bloomsburg and Lock Haven in Pennsylvania on Saturday.
Chaz Hallmark,
Caden Gerlach and
Brandon Paulson all won two matches on the day, while
Frank Almaguer,
Louis Rojas and
Arick Lopez all won a match for the Lancers, as well. It keeps Hallmark and Gerlach close for the season lead in wins for California Baptist University, as Hallmark leads by one with 13 while Gerlach and
AJ Raya are tied for second with 12.
CBU dropped both duals after having to forfeit two weight classes each time, but came close to a win in a 27-19 loss to host Bloomsburg after a 37-11 loss to Lock Haven to start the day. The Lancers move to 0-5 on the year, while Lock Haven improves to 5-5 and Bloomsburg to 4-2.
Hallmark's defense proved key to both of his wins Saturday. In his first match against LHU's Tyler Dilley, he pulled out a 12-3 major decision after some nice defense led him to a takedown and back points. He pinned BU's Aaron Coleman after flashing more quick thinking while on his back.
Gerlach was steady as ever with decision victories over Lock Haven's Colin Fegley (7-5) and Bloomsburg's Buridano Stolfi (6-1). Paulson picked up a 12-3 major decision over LHU's Tyler Dilley and then won an extra match with BU's Michael Cassidy (5-2).
The Lancers will continue dual action in two weeks when they travel to Colorado to take on Air Force on Thursday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. and Northern Colorado on Friday, Jan. 28 at 6 p.m.
