Hutton Nearly Makes History on Day Two of UCSB Winter Invite

SANTA BARBARA – A near historic performance from California Baptist University women's water polo's Jamie Hutton on day two of the UC Santa Barbara Winter Invite helped wrap up the first week of the season.
Hutton logged five assists – one off the Lancers' single-game record – in a 18-9 loss to 16th-ranked San Jose State to open Saturday's doubleheader at the UCSB Recreation Center Pool. The first week of the season then came to a close in a 20-3 loss to third-ranked UCLA.
CBU opens the season 0-4 after opening the season with four games against top-20 ranked opponents, including three in the top-16. San Jose State and UCLA both start out 2-0.
Through four games, Hutton leads the Lancers with nine points (eight assists, one goal) and seven drawn ejections on the year. Kira O'Donell is CBU's leading goal scorer with five and ranks second with eight points and also has seven drawn ejections. Maddie Schwegler and Cayleigh Carter have four goals apiece, while Vicky Martinez also has seven drawn ejections. Madison Gerg has 39 saves, nine steals and one assist after week one.
California Baptist put together its best showing on the young season against San Jose State. California Baptist played the Spartans tight in the first half. Goals from Schwegler and O'Donell had the California Baptist down just one, 3-2, with 1:21 left in the first quarter.
SJSU pushed its lead as high as four, 6-2, with 5:22 left in the second quarter but goals from Morgan Baker and Martinez brought the Lancers back within three at halftime, 7-4.
Overall, O'Donell scored a team-high three goals and had an assist and drawn ejection on San Jose State. Hutton finished with six points, with a goal, four drawn ejections and a field block. Carter and Taylor Frandsen also scored in the game.
Defensively, Gerg had eight saves and two steals in the cage. Celeste Almendariz also had two steals and an assist in her first career start. Abby Mammen also had two assists.
Schwegler, O'Donell and Lahela Rosario all scored for CBU against the Bruins. Julia Miller (five saves) and Madi Crookston (three saves, one steal) split time in the cage and wound up with eight saves between them.
