RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University men's soccer returned home Thursday night, hosting The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley for their Western Athletic Conference home opener. A physical game, that was tied at halftime, eventually went the way of the Vaqueros, who earned a 3-1 victory.
"This year there have been a number of games that didn't go our way that should have. However, second half tonight was not one of our better performances," head coach Coe Michaelson said after the match. "While I know we are short-handed and exhausted, this is where character and togetherness has to shine through. We may not be fresh, but we need to be ready for a vital match on Saturday."
UTRGV opened up scoring early, driving home a rebounded blocked shot in the eighth minute to take the first lead. CBU answered later in the first half as Bryan Iliohan drew a free kick a few yards outside the 18-yard box and cashed in on the free-kick opportunity in the 25th minute.

The Vaqueros would convert a penalty kick in the 70th minute before putting the game out of reach with a third goal 10 minutes later. UTRGV earned nine corners to the Lancers' four, while CBU outshot their guests 13-8 over the course of the 90 minutes.
The result pushes the CBU season record to 4-5-2 while still searching for its first conference win at 0-2-1. UTRGV improves to 4-5-3 and 2-2-1 in WAC play.
CBU will return to the home pitch on October 15 at 7 p.m. to take on the Houston Christian Huskies.
