Lancers Storm To Victory Over The Huskies On The Back of Mueller’s Brace
10/16/2022 1:21:00 AM | Men's Soccer
RIVERSIDE – Multiple weather delays could not dampen the spirit of California Baptist University men's soccer team who wrapped their game against Houston Christian at nearly 11:30 p.m. with a 2-0 victory. Luis Mueller netted both goals for the Lancers in the win, his second multi-score game as a Lancer.
CBU improves to 5-5-2 on the year with a 1-2-1 record in the Western Athletic Conference, while HCU falls to 5-5-5 overall with a 1-2-3 WAC record.
"Tonight was an incredibly challenging game mentally. Dealing with multiple delays and trying to stay loose and ready is not easy, but I'm so proud of the guys for coming through," head coach Coe Michaelson commented after the game. "We have had a lot of bad luck in the past few weeks so when the game got delayed 30 minutes in when we were on top and playing well, it seemed to fit the recent trend. But to overcome that and get a win is huge for us. Our commitment tonight was to be better than any bad luck that came our way, to be resilient, and to fight for one another, and we did that. I'm happy for Luis. He is an incredible talent, and he showed that tonight. The challenge for him now is to come out and do that again next game."
The threat of rare Southern California thunderstorms pushed back the initial start time of the game, and forced an additional stoppage with 17 minutes left in a scoreless first half. The storm finally passed on and the two teams took the field again to the delight of the dedicated fans who persevered through the delay as well.
A scoreless draw dragged on well into the second half before Luis Mueller tucked the game-winner into the back of the net, threading multiple Husky defenders and an outstretched keeper to take a 1-0 lead.
His second goal came 20 minutes later when he was tasked with a penalty shot. He left no doubt, adding the insurance goal and keeping his PK record flawless, having now converted 4-out-of-4 career opportunities.
A physical game led to HCU playing most of the game a man down after a Husky was shown a red card in the 38th minute.
The Lancers hit the road again next week, making pit stops in San Jose to take on the Spartans (Oct. 21 at 7 p.m.), and in Seattle to challenge the Redhawks (Oct. 23 at 1 p.m.).
