SANTA CLARA – Two nationally-ranked water polo teams battled it out on Thursday night as 16th-ranked California Baptist University stood firm against 17th-ranked Santa Clara in northern California, defeating the Broncos 9-8 in their home pool.
CBU improves to 18-9 on the season and 3-2 in the Western Water Polo Association in this conference match. Santa Clara drops to 6-9 this year with a 1-3 WWPA tally.
The teams were locked in a defensive battle for 32 minutes, combining for 24 steals and with CBU holding the host team to 0-11 on power play opportunities. The difference in the game came with just 22 seconds left when Lancer attacker Cameron Cullen scored his second goal of the match, giving CBU the game-clinching point.
