SAN JOSE – California Baptist University men's soccer ended multiple San Jose State streaks on Thursday night, downing the Spartans 1-0 on their home field. The Lancers end a four-game win streak and a seven-game unbeaten streak that SJSU had running, also handing them their first conference loss of the year.
The Lancers earned three huge points in the Western Athletic Conference standings, moving into fifth place as of Thursday night. CBU improves to 6-5-2 on the year and 2-2-1 in the WAC, while San Jose State now stands at 7-4-2 overall and 3-1-1 in conference.
"We challenged our guys tonight to put their name on their performance as a representation of who they want to be and they came through," commented head coach Coe Michaelson after the game. "It's unfortunate we weren't able to add to our tally. We created several great opportunities to do so, but in the end, the execution of our pressing plan to disrupt their buildup at times combined with our grit and determination is what I'm most proud of. It has been a long time coming and not the first one we deserved, but that was a big road win against a good team."
The match got off to a chippy start, but once things settled down, the Lancers took control of possession and the first half. CBU outshot San Jose 7-2 in the first 45 minutes, with the sixth finding its way to the back of the net. Despite being surrounded by four Spartan defenders, David Cordes connected his head with a Luis Mueller corner kick to score what would be the game-winner in the 33rd minute.

Nolan Premack earned his fourth clean sheet of the season, making two incredible saves during the match. Cordes is now third on the team with six points (two goals, two assists), while Mueller's assist moves him into sole possession of first place in the team points, standing with 12.
The trip continues as the Lancers travel north up the West Coast to challenge Seattle U on Sunday, Oct. 21. The Redhawks currently sit second in the league table, three points behind Air Force, while currently riding a three-game win streak of their own.
