SEATTLE – California Baptist University men's soccer collected three more points on Sunday, defeating Seattle U in Seattle by a score of 3-1. The Lancers are now owners of three-straight victories, the last two of which came on the road.
The Lancers now stand at 7-5-2 on the season with a 3-2-1 Western Athletic Conference record. Today's three well-deserved points pushed their conference total to 10, percentage points ahead of UTRGV, who defeated Grand Canyon on Sunday, allowing the Lancers to vault into fourth place in the league standings. The Redhawks are still ahead of CBU in the standings, owning a 5-7-1 overall record but a 4-2 tally in the WAC, good for a dozen points.
"We always knew this was going to be a very challenging road trip, so to get six points against two good programs on the road really was big time. It was nice to see Luis perform like the big-time player he has always had the potential to be, and Bryan really took his goal nicely," said head coach Coe Michaelson after the match. "Unfortunately, we got a little sloppy at 3-0, and they put us under a period of pressure, but it was great to see Nolan come up big to preserve a deserved win."
Luis Mueller opened up the scoring by burring his third penalty kick of the season. He now stands at 5-for-5 during his Lancer career. The Lancer defense was stingy in the first half, holding the Redhawks to just two shots in the opening frame, neither of which tested starting goalkeeper Nolan Premack.
The second half saw a much more aggressive Seattle attack, ripping off nine shots and earning half a dozen corner kicks, matching CBU's first half tally. Bryan Iliohan found the back of the net in the 58th minute, pushing the Lancer lead to two before Mueller completed his brace in the 69th minute to give the Lancers a 3-0 lead.
The Redhawks would tack one on late in the 76th minute, but Premack stopped two decent chances in the 80th and 90th minutes to preserve the two-goal victory.
CBU will look to add to its win streak this coming weekend, taking on the UNLV Rebels (Oct. 28 at 7 p.m.) and the Utah Tech Trailblazers (Oct. 30 at 7 p.m.) at the CBU Soccer Stadium.
