Lakewood, Wash. - The California Baptist University women's golf program fired the best team score (286) of the final round to finish in fourth place among the 21-team field at the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invite hosted by Seattle U at the Tacoma Country and Golf Club on Tuesday.
Junior Hailey Loh entered the day at the top of the leaderboard after posting a three-under-par score through the first 36 holes. After carding an even-par final round, she was able to claim her first career collegiate tournament win after finishing in a three-way tie for first place with Nevada's Victoria Gailey and Cal State Fullerton's Davina Xanh. The trio advanced to a sudden-death playoff where Gailey captured the crown.
"I'm very proud of Hailey for getting her first collegiate win," said CBU head coach Marc Machado. "She has been wanting this for a while and I know this moment will springboard her into more accomplishments in the near future. This won't be Hailey's last victory this season."
The Lancers finished the tournament with a total score of 883. Gonzaga, the event champion, posted a three-round total of 872, while Weber State finished at 873 and Nevada at 880.
CBU, as a team, entered today's final round tied at 12th place. The Lancers posted the second-lowest team score of the entire tournament on Tuesday, outpacing the next best score of the day by Nevada (291) by five strokes. CBU skyrocketed up the leaderboard in the final two rounds, with the second (286) and third (288) best single-round team scores. Weber State posted the best single-round team score of the tournament with 283 in the second round.
"This TEAM displayed a lot of grit, fight, and heart," said Machado. "They played the last 36 holes of the event at two-under and had the lowest round on their final round. This is just the boost we needed to realize our potential. Also, it's great to see our two freshmen fitting in so nicely on and off the golf course. They are competing like veterans."
Next up for the Lancers is The Clash at Boulder Creek, hosted by Northern Arizona, in Flagstaff on Oct. 23-25.
