RIVERSIDE – The 16th-ranked California Baptist University men's water polo team opened the annual Lancer Joust tournament with a perfect 3-0 day, earning victories in games against Toronto (15-6) and Fresno Pacific (26-6) as well as an exhibition match against Cuesta (17-7) to improve their season record to 14-8 overall.
Among the many statistics today, none shined brighter than Thomas de Wit and his record-breaking assist on the Lancers' opening goal against Toronto. With that pass, de Wit broke the program record for consecutive games with an assist with 21. He would extend his streak to 23-in-a-row later that evening against Fresno Pacific.
GAME ONE VERSE TORONTO
CBU spread the scoring around in game one, with a dozen Lancers chipping in at least one goal to get to their final score of 15. Logan Puhl managed a hat trick against the Varsity Blues, and Bohdi Bowden also recorded a multi-goal game with two to go with an assist and three steals. De Wit tallied four assists in game one.
Tristan Felberg and Trevor Benge split time at keeper, with Felberg limiting Toronto to just one goal scored, but Benge recorded five saves to Felberg's three.
GAME TWO VERSE FRESNO PACIFIC
The Lancers and Sunbirds met up just eight days prior, and coincidentally, both games ended with identical 26-6 score lines. Caleb Teraoka and Stephen Partsch posted hat tricks against FPU. For Teraoka, it was his fourth of the season, and for Partsch, it was his first in a Lancer cap.
Angel Sanchez, Matt Olsen, Alex Righetti, Joseph Griffin, and Jacob Sill all netted a pair of goals as the Lancers cruised to victory.
Felberg defended the cage for all 32 minutes against Fresno Pacific, stopping three shots and assisting on one CBU goal.
The Lancer Joust will wrap up tomorrow with another seven games in total. CBU will take on Concordia at 11:40 a.m. before capping the day and tournament against Cal Lutheran at 5 p.m. The culminating game against the Kingsmen will also serve as Senior Night for four Lancer legends; Tristan Felberg, Angel Sanchez, Joseph Griffin, and Thomas de Wit. Honors will happen before the game.
