LOS ANGELES – California Baptist University men's water polo closed out the 2022 season on a high note on Saturday afternoon, winning a tightly contested game in the WWPA tournament against Air Force, 10-9. The Lancers avenged a loss to the Falcons on October 29 in Colorado.
The Lancers trailed by a goal at halftime, 4-3, as both defenses were on point when it mattered most, evident in CBU's ability to blank Air Force on 11 power play opportunities during the match. The third period saw CBU take the lead with 3:02 left in the game off a Logan Puhl goal.
The Lancers trailed late, down 9-8 with 3:07 left, before mounting the final push. CBU leveled the score at nine-all when Joseph Griffin secured his only goal of the match, helped out by an assist from Ian Escoto. The game's final score was dramatic, as Caleb Teraoka deposited a penalty shot with one second left on the game clock to secure the win for his squad.
The Lancers close out the year with a Division I program record 23 wins. This mark surpasses the previous mark of 22 set in 2018.
