Lancers Upset Utah Valley In WAC Tournament Opener, Claim Historic Postseason Victory

RIVERSIDE – It was worth the wait. Fifth-seeded California Baptist University men's soccer had a night for the ages, hosting its first WAC Men's Soccer Tournament, playing in the primetime game, and putting the finishing touch on the night with an electric 3-1 victory over No. 4 seed Utah Valley. The Lancers avenged a loss in the season finale that cost them a potential first-round bye, defeating the Wolverines with a pair of second-half goals.
Adolfo Pino, Leo Mendez, and Luis Mueller all posted a goal in the Lancers' postseason debut, with Mendez adding an assist to take the early points lead in the tournament. Brian Gonzalez and Anthony Vargas each helped on Pino's opener and David Cordes got the defenders in the scoring column with his assist on Mueller's final goal.
"It has been a long wait for the chance to compete in the postseason, and so it was a very special night with a great crowd and an awesome atmosphere," said head coach Coe Michaelson after his milestone win for CBU. "The guys put in a fantastic performance and deserved the result. We are very happy with tonight, but at this point, our focus moves to Friday. We have a big task ahead of us, but I think the guys will be ready for it."
Pino wasted no time getting CBU on the board, netting his landmark goal in the eighth minute of regulation. Vargas and Gonzalez set up Pino who launched it through a multitude of bodies, hiding it from the goalkeeper's sight who saw it too late to even make an attempt at a save.
The Wolverines would level the score in the 31st minute to go into the break tied at one-all.
The second half was all CBU as they were the aggressor for much of the second 45 minutes. Mendez broke the tie with a spectacular sliding effort inside the box in the 64th minute. His fourth goal of the season was his first game-winner of the year.
Mueller put the finishing touches on a fabulous night for the German national, putting his breakaway speed on full display as he flew by the lone defender charged with slowing him and collected his own rebound from his first shot attempt that was blocked and tucked his second attempt into the net with no resistance.
The Lancers road does not get any easier from here as they now turn their focus to top-seeded Air Force. CBU will face the regular season champions at 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon at CBU Soccer Stadium. Day two tickets can be purchased ahead of time here.
