ST. GEORGE --- Taran Armstrong and Ty Rowell led the Lancers to victory on Thursday night, as California Baptist University opened its Utah road swing with a 71-61 win over Dixie State.
The win splits the season's series between the two programs, as each team was able to win on the road. With the win, the Lancers move to one game back from the Trailblazers in the Western Athletic Conference standings, as the Lancers improve to 15-13 on the year and 5-10 in conference play. The Trailblazers fall to 13-15 on the season and 6-9 in the WAC.
The duo of Armstrong and Rowell paced the Lancers all night, as the duo finished as the only Lancers in double figures with 18 apiece. Armstrong and Rowell combined for 11 of the Lancers' 24 field goals in the game.
After a slow start to the first half by both teams, California Baptist was able to find its rhythm in the second half.
"Dixie throws a massive first punch," said head coach Rick Croy. "That can happen on the road. That first four minutes can be really demanding. Tonight, it demanded poise. We kept our eyes and kept our talk, and we were able to fight back and pull even at the half. In the second half, it was one of our most complete halves of the season. Both, offensively and defensively, we were really connected."It all started with Rowell, who knocked down his 232nd career three at the 15:02 mark to give the Lancers a two-point lead, 35-33. The three by Rowell surpassed Jordan Heading for the top spot on the all-time career list for most made threes at CBU.
