CBU Opens Day One Of Mary Nutter Against #8 Arizona And Texas Tech

CATHEDRAL CITY – California Baptist University softball took on stiff competition on opening day of the Mary Nutter Classic in Cathedral City, dropping both ends of the doubleheader, 6-2 to #8 Arizona and 5-0 to Texas Tech. The Lancers' record now sits at 5-7 with another top-25 match up awaiting them Friday in the form of #24 BYU.
GAME ONE
The Lancers opened play at the famed Mary Nutter Classic against No. 8 Arizona. The Wildcats came in with a 7-2 record and put the pressure on the Lancers early, scoring four unearned runs in the second inning to take an early lead.
CBU gave up one more in the third, but didn't go down without a fight. After Katelyn Mangrello knocked a one-out single in the bottom of the fourth, Makayla Jordan took a full-count pitch and crushed it over the left center wall, cutting the Wildcat lead to 5-2.
Arizona would answer with a solo homer in the fifth, but neither team would truly threaten after that. Game one starting pitcher Amanda Hernandez was tagged for the loss despite four strikeouts and allowing just two earned runs on six hits. Jordan Schuring closed out the final three innings of the game striking out four while allowing just three hits and no runs.
GAME TWO
Texas Tech came in looking to break a seven-game winless streak and that motivation paid off as the Red Raiders hit early and often in the victory. TTU placed runners on first and second with two outs in each of the first three innings, and the Lancers were able to escape in the first two, but Tech prevailed in the third, plating their first two runs.
They would add three more in the fourth to make it a 5-0 game, which proved to be the final score.
CBU's Raegan Cheyne recorded the Lancers' only multi-hit game on the day, going 2-for-3 against Texas Tech, with hits also coming from Jordan, Maile Olsen, Kenzie Yamakoshi and Mia Alvarez. Alyssa Argomaniz began the game in the circle, allowing one earned run on five hits,.
UP NEXT
The tournament continues on Friday with a single game as CBU takes on #24 BYU at 10 a.m. at the Pawtucket Field in the Big League Dreams Softball Complex.
