RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University softball posted a 4-1 record last week, taking down the likes of UC Riverside, Southern Utah, CSUN and Army. It proved to be a very big weekend for the Argomaniz sisters, who led the team in the circle and at the plate.
First baseman Amanda Argomaniz hit .400 during the Lancers' five-game slate, driving in a team high three RBI and collecting her first career triple in the team's game against Army. Younger sister Alyssa Argomaniz came up big on the rubber, earning two wins and a save while posting a sub-two ERA for the weekend and striking out 18 batters in 16 innings of work.
Katelyn Mangrello built up a team-best eight game hitting streak that unfortunately ended on Sunday, but the junior from Fountain Valley is still leading the team in hitting at .367 through 10 games. Ole Miss transfer and Inland Empire native Raegan Chayne is currently pacing the Lancers in runs scored with six while Makayla Jordan owns the most runs batted in with seven.
The pitching staff boasts a two-headed monster with Jazmine Castaneda and Alyssa Argomaniz each rounding into form. Castaneda just edges Argomaniz in most pitching categories, as she currently maintains the team-best ERA (2.77), strikeout total (22) and opponent batting average (.209).

Arizona has a long, storied history of success on the diamond, but when 36-year head coach Mike Candrea departed after last season, many wondered how the program would respond. The team seems to be doing just fine with his replacement, Caitlin Lowe, an Arizona legend who earned All-American honors four times while playing for Candrea before joining his staff in 2012.
The ninth-ranked Wildcats come into the tournament opener having won five of their last six games, and with just two loses all season, both to top-16 opponents. The Arizona bats have been hot this season as seven regular starters are boasting averages of at least .333, with Jasmine Perezchica topping out at .500 (13-26).
Texas Tech was a 42-win team as recently as 2019, but the Red Raiders finished last season at 21-26 and have started 2022 with a record of 3-7. Four of those losses were to top-25 teams, but the Raiders have been outscored in those losses 33-11. TTU is hitting below the Mendoza Line (.200) as a squad, posting a .191 average through 10 games.
Brigham Young enters the tournament on an eight-game win streak, taking down Stanford a team that is receiving votes in the national poll by a score of 4-3, as well as WAC favorites Seattle U, 5-2. The Cougar bats are already in mid-season form as the team batting average sits at .311 with 15 of their 60 hits going for extra-bases.
UC San Diego is 5-5 on the season after opening with a tough schedule that included games against #1 Oklahoma, #4 UCLA, #16 Oregon and Utah. The Tritons ace Jada Cecil already owns a 3-1 record with an impressive 1.30 earned run average and 38 strikeouts in 27 innings of work.
CBU and UC Davis will face each other for the fourth time in three years, with the Lancers owning a 2-1 advantage in the series so far. The Aggies enter with a 5-2 record overall in 2022, most recently taking two-of-three in a series against Fresno State. UC Davis controls the game from the circle, boasting a staff ERA of 1.31 and a nearly two-to-one strikeout to walk ratio.
