CBU Puts Together Historic Day at Tina Finali Invite

THOUSAND OAKS – An all-around historic day highlighted California Baptist University women's water polo's first day at the Tina Finali Invitational at California Lutheran on Friday.

Kira O'Donell tied CBU's single-game record for goals scored with seven, while the Lancers picked up one of the most dominant wins in program history at California Lutheran's Samuelson Aquatic Center. California Baptist rolled to a 21-6 win over Chapman and pushed Long Island in a one-goal loss, 14-13. Those 21 goals tied for the fourth most in CBU's single-game history, while the 15-goal margin of victory was one off top-10 standing.

CBU nearly pulled off the comeback against the 22^nd-ranked LIU Sharks, who defeated 10^th-ranked Indiana (14-9) earlier this season. The Lancers are now 5-9 this season, while LIU improves to 6-4 and Chapman is handed its first loss at 4-1.

O'Donell's seven-goal game against Long Island was the first such performance since 2015 and just the sixth time in team history. She joins an elite list of four Lancers to accomplish the feat, including Hannah Evans, Laura Kocsis and Petra Kovas.

The senior attacker has now scored six goals or more in six games, including three times this season. She's scored in the last 12 games and has eight multi-goal performances, including seven hat tricks.

CBU will wrap up the Tina Finali Invite with games against host Cal Lutheran and CSU Monterey Bay on Saturday at 1 p.m. and 4:45 p.m., respectively.

LONG ISLAND
Along with the seven goals, O'Donell had two assists and a steal against the Sharks. Jamie Hutton also had four goals and four assists and two steals in the contest. Madison Gerg added eight saves, two assists and a steal in the cage.

CBU trailed Long Island 8-4 just before halftime but had its comeback attempt stopped just short. The Lancers outscored the Sharks 9-6 over the final 16-and-a-half minutes.

O'Donell scored three-straight goals in two minutes, four seconds of gameplay to cut CBU's deficit down to a goal, 8-7, with 6:26 left in the third quarter.

LIU jumped back in front 13-10 with 1:27 left to play, but CBU closed out the final 8:40 of play on a 3-1 run thanks to two more goals from O'Donell and another from Hutton.

CHAPMAN
CBU notched a season-high 21 goals in the win over Chapman, with 12 different Lancers scoring in the game. Vicky Martinez led the way with a game-high four goals, while Dora Lehoczky also had a hat trick.

Maddie Schwegler, Ellie Cruz, Kira O'Donell and Nicole Rhoads all scored two goals in the contest. California Baptist's centers combined for eight goals, with Martinez, Schwegler and Rhoads all scoring multiple times.

The Lancers ended the first quarter with a 7-2 lead after Martinez scored three-straight goals over the final 1:44 of the quarter. O'Donell also scored both her goals in the first quarter. CBU blanked Chapman in the second quarter for a 14-2 lead at halftime.

Schwegler, Lehoczky and Cruz scored twice in the second quarter. Rhoads scored both her goals in the third quarter. Abby Mammen, Gabrielle Aguilar and Jenna Dickstein capped the scoring for CBU in the fourth.
