CBU Opens Track Season with New Record, 10 New Top-10 Times

RIVERSIDE — California Baptist University track wasted no time in its season opener at the Riverside City College Invitational on Friday night.
The Lancers logged 10 new top-10 3,000-meter times in program history. Florian Le Pallec shattered the men's record with a time of eight minutes and 3.18 seconds.

A total of six Lancer men broke what was the record coming into the season, Ivo Balabanov's 8:21.15 from the 2020 Pomona-Pitzer All Comers meet. Giedrius Valincius (8:06.91), Balabanov (8:09.11), Rikus Van Niekerk (8:14.60), Dylan Van Der Hock (8:16.42) and Massimiliano Berti (8:18.59) all joined Le Pallec in that feat.
Arturs Medveds (8:21.47, eighth) and Zlatko Kozuhar (8:23.13, 10th) all logged top-10 times in program history, as well. Those nine Lancers took first through ninth in Friday's race, while Matias Reynaga (8:31.83) and Tyler Tickner (8:34.23) also took 10th and 11th for CBU.

On the women's side, Greta Karinauskaite (9:38.43, fifth) and Anneken Viljoen (9:47.20, eighth) produced top-10 times in CBU's history. Karinauskaite was not far off the all-time record of 9:35.58 set back in 2020 by Anett Somogyi. Emilia Mikszuta (9:51.87, eighth) and Carlota Rodes (9:52.89, ninth) etched themselves into the Lancers' top-10 individual list, as well.

Those four were part of California Baptist taking the top-seven spots and nine of the top-10 finishers in the race. Cynthia Martin (10:04.61), Pinja Kotinurmi (10:12.52), Paige Haynes (10:19.62) placed fifth through seventh, while Mia Cabrera (10:34.20) and Sylvia de la Pena (10:37.68) took ninth and 10th for the Lancers. Nadia Martinez came in 14th (11:37.32).
CBU will be back in action next week at Cal State Fullerton's Ben Brown Invitational on Friday-Saturday, March 11-12.
