CBU Faces Off With Utah Valley In Friday Doubleheader

OREM – California Baptist University softball headed back on the road, beginning a three-game Western Athletic Conference series against Utah Valley on Friday. The Wolverines defended their home diamond in both ends of the series opening doubleheader, winning 10-0 and 4-3. The Lancers now stand at 24-22 on the season and drop to 6-8 in the WAC. Utah Valley improves to 15-17 and 6-8 on the year.

GAME ONE

The opening contest of the doubleheader was all Wolverines as the home team scored 10 unanswered runs in the first three innings of the game. Amanda Argomaniz went 2-for-2 in the series opener, pacing a Lancer team that posted four hits, but were unable to push any across in the shortened first game.

GAME TWO

The Wolverine bats stayed hot to begin game two, stringing together four-straight singles in the bottom of the first to build an early 2-0 lead. Maile Olsen would lead off the second inning with her first of three hits in the game, a single to left center. After advancing on a sacrifice bunt, Olsen would score on Shelby Arbeiter's RBI single to center.

Each team would post a hit in both sides of the third and fourth innings, but scoring would not resume until UVU posted a single run in the bottom of the fifth inning. CBU would answer in the next frame, starting with a pair of doubles, the first from Sydney Soto, followed by Olsen whose hit would score Soto.

Maile was gifted third base on a passed ball and would score one batter later as Nicole Stark laid down a perfect bunt, reaching first safely and scoring the tying run on the throw to first.

The game would be pushed into extra innings after neither team would claim the winning run in regulation. The Lancers would manage to put one runner one in the top of the eighth, but she would be stranded at first base. The first Wolverine batter struck out swinging after a 10-pitch battle, but the second Utah Valley batter would end it with a solo shot to left field.

The series finale will be played on Saturday afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m. Pacific.
