RIVERSIDE - California Baptist University softball is riding high after winning last weekend's series against Dixie State with a clutch late-game performance at the plate from Sydney Soto and a dominate outing from Jazmine Castaneda in the circle.
The Lancers will look to continue adding to their NCAA Division I era single-season win record, which now stands at 23 as they take on Cal State Fullerton and Utah Valley. The team's 6-6 Western Athletic Conference record is good for sole possession of third place in the West Division.
At the halfway point in the conference calendar, Katelyn Mangrello, Deja Westbrook, and Karmyna Becerra are the regular starters that lead the team at the plate, all owning batting averages at or over .400 in WAC play. Mangrello is currently connecting at a .444 (16-36) clip, and leading the team with 11 RBI in conference play. Freshman Becerra is 10-25 with an on-base percentage of .467, just seven points behind Mangrello at the top of te category.
Castaneda is the leader in the circle when it comes to WAC contests, currently posting a 4-2 record with a 2.16 ERA while allowing just a .235 opponent batting average. Castaneda threw her second one-hitter of the season against Dixie State on Friday night, the second such outing of the season for the Madera native.

Fullerton will arrive in Riverside with a 25-13 record on the season with intent on extending its current five-game winning streak. The Titans are 15-4 in away and neutral site matchups and most recently swept a three-game road series against Big West foe CSUN. The Titans now boast a 10-2 record in the Big West where they lead Long Beach State by one game for the top spot in the conference standings.
Megan Delgadillo and Hannah Becerra are a lightning and thunder type of duo leading the Titans at the plate. Delgadillo is batting .364 with 36 runs scored and a team-high 25 stolen bases while Becerra is a hair below her teammate with a .360 batting average, but maintains team-highs in home runs (seven), runs scored (38) and runs batted in (31).
Myka Sutherlin is the Titan's clear ace in the circle with a staff-best 11 wins, 2.48 ERA, six complete games and 104 strikeouts in just 93.0 innings pitched. The Wolverines start the week with a 13-17 overall record, but will play a doubleheader against Utah on Tuesday before the Lancers arrive for their WAC showdown. Utah Valley ended it's previous conference series against Grand Canyon with a huge 12-8 win over Grand Canyon in Phoenix. The Lopes outhit UVU 13-12, but the Wolverines put together a massive five run seventh inning, including a two-out grand slam to seal the victory.
Utah Valley has a team batting average of .317 which is thanks in large part to six Wolverines who are averaging .337 or better at the plate. Four UVU starters account for 26 of the team's 28 home runs, creating a daunting stretch of hitters for any pitching staff to face.
On the flip side, the Wolverines pitching staff relies heavily on two pitchers, Katie Zuniga and Brooke Carter, who currently own ERA's of 6.27 and 6.49, respectively. While the staff does boast a respectable 2.13/1 strikeout-to-walk ratio, the battery is allowing opponents an average .360 at the plate.
