CBU Sweeps Season Set With CSU Bakersfield After Wild Sixth Inning

Both California Baptist University baseball and CSU Bakersfield combined for 17 runs in a sixth inning that took 58 minutes on Tuesday night at Totman Stadium. It highlighted a 13-10 Lancer victory, as they swept the home-and-home series with CSUB after a 4-3 win in Bakersfield on March 8.
CBU has now won four-straight games and seven of its last eight to improve to 20-7 on the year. The Roadrunners, who were coming off a Big West Conference series win over Cal State Fullerton, drop to 12-15 in 2022.
Three Lancers had at least three hits in the game, while five had multiple hits. Mitchel Simon led the way with a 4-for-5 night that included, three runs, two runs batted in and his fourth homer in as many games.

Chad Castillo and Jake Skipworth both went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. Harrison Spohn (two RBI) and Michael Carpentier both went 2-for-4.
It was a staff night for the Lancers' pitchers, as nine arms took the mound for CBU. Liam Rocha threw the final three innings to record his second save of the season.
No one else threw over 1.1 innings. Mason McGarvey, Ryan Silva, Carson Olsen and Seth Mattox also had scoreless innings for CBU.

CBU scored the first six runs of the game over the first five innings, but CSU Bakersfield responded with a 10-run frame in the top of the sixth.
There was no panic from the Lancers, who answered with a seven-run inning immediately afterward. A two-run homer from Simon and three-run bomb from Russell Stevenson headlined the rally for CBU, which also got RBI singles from Castillo and Skipworth in the sixth.

CBU scored the first two runs of the game in the second inning. Simon led off the inning with a single, stole second and moved to third on a grounder before he scored on a wild pitch with two outs. It didn't end there, as a David Martin double and RBI single from Spohn made it 2-0.
Heads-up base running from Spohn led to CBU's third run in the fourth. He ran home from third after a throwing error from the pitcher on a pick-off attempt. The Lancers pushed their lead to 6-0 with three runs in the fifth on a bases-loaded walk to Spohn, RBI grounder from Castillo and run-scoring single from Skipworth.
There were a number of web gems from CBU, as well, on Tuesday. Garret Ostrander had an excellent leaping catch into the fence in left field.

UP NEXT
The Lancers continue non-conference play with a three-game series at Air Force. The opener is set for a 2 p.m. Pacific first pitch on Friday, April 8, with the last two games starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday-Sunday, April 9-10.
It's the start of a season-long, seven-game road swing for CBU. The Lancers will travel to Long Beach State for a mid-week game on Tuesday, April 12, at 6 p.m. and pick back up Western Athletic Conference play at West Division leader Grand Canyon (April 14-16).
