CHARLESTON – California Baptist University volleyball will open the 2022 season at Charleston Southern Tournament this weekend. The Lancers will play a trio of matches against St. John's, Appalachian State, and the host Bucs.
This will be the team's first season at postseason eligibility in NCAA Division I and the Western Athletic Conference after the NCAA Division I Board of Directors granted CBU active status in early August.
Last season, CBU posted a 13-11 overall and 8-6 conference record last year to finish tied for fourth in the WAC West Division. It completed the program's 17th season with a .500 record or better over the last 18 years.
The Lancers return 12 players from 2021, including six seniors in Cassidy Dennison, Chandler Gorman, Paige Johnstone, Scherine Dahoue, Christine Graf and Leah Pease. Their 18-woman roster includes six newcomers divided evenly between three true freshmen (Toree Tiffee, Reese Reed, Alexa Niko) and transfers (Michalina Rola, Miami; Mia Jerue, Cal State Fullerton; Ashlyn Beaver, Oregon State).
Balance was key to California Baptist's success in 2021. Nine different players started at least five matches. Offensively, the Lancers had four players averaging 2.13 kills a set or more. It was just the third time in the last 15 years the team could say that.
Graf and Dahoue are the team's top-two returners on the offensive side of the net. Graf averaged 2.70 kills per set on a .256 hitting percentage. Dahoue averaged three points and 2.54 kills per set a season ago.
Both Graf and Laura Walewska reaped All-WAC honors in 2021, with Graf making the conference's Second Team and Walewska earning an All-Freshman Team nod.
CBU returns several key players to its defense, as well in middle blockers Walewska, Gorman and Johnstone at libero. Johnstone average 4.14 digs per set a season ago, while Gorman had 1.19 blocks a set. Walewska was an all-around threat with 0.75 blocks and 1.51 kills per set in her debut campaign.
