Veteran returner Luis Mueller led California Baptist with a goal and an assist on the night. Newcomers to the squad Anthony Vargas, a junior transfer from Mt. San Antonio College, and true freshman Adolfo Pino scored in their first games in a Lancer uniform.
"We are happy to get a win in our first home game under the lights," said head coach Coe Michaelson. "It was great to have a nice turnout, and it will be even more exciting with students on campus here soon. But, first we have a big match at UCSB to look forward to on Sunday."
CBU scored the first three goals of the game, including two in the first half, while St. Thomas got on the board thanks to a penalty kick in the final nine minutes. The Lancers begin the campaign at 1-0 and the Tommies start out at 0-1.
Goalkeeper Nolan Premack secured the lead for California Baptist with four saves, including two in the final six minutes. The Lancers dominated in terms of chances, as well, with a 10-3 advantage in corners and 18-8 lead in shots.
The Lancers controlled most of the game and were rewarded with their goal 23 minutes into the season. Vargas found the back of the net in his first game for CBU off a beautiful cross from Mueller.
