Lancers Begin 2023 With Double Home Duals

RIVERSIDE--- The Lancers returned to the Van Dyne Gym for the first time since November 18th when they faced Utah Valley. They returned to a double dual against Northern Illinois and #19 South Dakota State. The match against the Jackrabbits of SDSU was their third BIG 12 matchup of the season and marked their third match against a ranked opponent. California Baptist University came up short in both duals with scores of 20-15 against NIU and 44-0 against SDSU.
N. Illinois- The Lancers and Huskies battled through every weight class, and the match came down to the heavyweight of Chris Island and Terrese Aaron. The match went to overtime off of a last-second stall call against CBU, and the Huskies would take it in the extra period with a takedown and take the dual 20-15. Four Lancers prevailed in their opening dual, including Hunter Leake, Frank Almaguer, Louis Rojas, and Caden Gerlach. The most impressive of these was by Frank Almaguer, who took down the #9 ranked wrestler in the 165 weight class in overtime. Almaguer battled Izzak Olejnik of the Huskies through three rounds before Olejnik attempted to wrap Almaguer's legs and Almaguer countered with the takedown to secure three points for the Lancers. Peter Acciradi and Chris Island also forced overtime in their respective matches but ultimately fell short.

SDSU: The Jackrabbits featured eight ranked wrestlers, including two in the top 15 of their respective weight classes. The 19th-ranked Jackrabbits secured victory over the Lancers by a score of 44-0. Elijah Griffin and Hunter Leake kept their matches close and forced decisions.
