RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University men's soccer earned their second-straight 3-0 Western Athletic Conference win on Thursday night, sending The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros away without much to show for their efforts. The Lancers improve to 4-4-2 on the year and 2-0 in conference play while UTRGV drops to 4-6 overall and 1-2 in the WAC.
"After starting the game well, UTRGV responded to our fast start and really posed us some problems in the latter stages of the first half. But, we really played a nice second half. We got back on the ball and had a good deal of control, created chances, and really didn't give away much," said Coe Michaelson after another shutout victory. "We have always said our DNA needs to start with what we do defensively, so it's good to see us start getting clean sheets. We are developing a rhythm at the right time, but we know we have an extremely difficult road trip coming up and that we can be better. So we will continue seeking to grow and improve."
Stavros Charalampous and Luis Borrero claimed the two Lancer goals on the night. The scoring opened with an unfortunate UTRGV own-goal in the 13th minute to give CBU an early, gifted cushion.
However, just five minutes later, Charalampous would claim his first goal as a Lancer, striking on a volley inside the Vaquero box with more pace than the UTRGV keeper could possibly deal with.
CBU took that 2-0 lead into the break but wasn't done there. They would rattle off 10 of their 19 shots in the second half, including a putback goal by Borrero off a Luis Mueller free kick that was inches from going in itself. The free kick hit the left post and flew through the box untouched until a running Borrero met it with his left foot, freezing the Vaquero keeper once more.
Nolan Premack continued his streak of home clean sheets, having not allowed a goal at CBU Soccer Stadium since Novemember 9, 2022, totalling 509 minutes and counting. His 10th career shutout makes him far and away the Division I program leader, and also moves him into a tie for fourth place with Noah Oyler (2014-17) all-time.
The Lancers get an extended rest period with no game this weekend ahead the aforementioned road trip up the coast. CBU will first take on preseason runner-up pick San Jose State (4-4-4, 1-1-1) on Thursday, October 12, at 7:00 p.m. Then they will continue north to take on current WAC leader, #17 Seattle (7-2-3, 2-0-1 WAC) in the Emerald City at 2:00 p.m.
