ARLINGTON--- On the second half of the Texas road trip, the California Baptist University volleyball team took on the UT Arlington Mavericks, with the home team winning 3-0.
The loss for CBU evened their record in Western Athletic Conference play at 3-3, while improving the Mavericks to 3-3. The overall record for CBU remains at 10-7, while UT Arlington has pushed their mark to 14-5.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
After a back-and-forth opening start, the UT Arlington Mavericks produced a 6-0 run to force a pair of Lancer timeouts, eventually leading to the 25-15 victory in the opening frame.
The Mavericks replicated their opening-period success with a 25-13 set win over CBU. A bright spot in the set for the Lancers was freshman setter Maddie Brown, who provided CBU with instant offense, producing four assists, an ace, and a kill in the frame.
After another slow start, the Lancers picked up steam in the third with an early 7-1 run to force a Maverick timeout and give them a 10-8 advantage. The run was sparked by the insertion of Anna Jackson into the rotation, who recorded three kills and a block in the frame, most of which was done on the run for the Lancers.
The Mavericks would continue to attack, and the two teams went back and forth, eventually bringing the score to 22 all. UTA would win a crucial challenge in the waning points of the set and claim the 25-23 victory.
STATISTICAL NOTABLES:
Jackson posted a season-high with three kills in her third set action, while setter Leah Pease and Brown both recorded double-digit assists.
NEXT: The Lancers will return home before returning to Texas to face the UTRGV Vaqueros on Saturday, October 14, at noon PT.
