Lancers Split Home Matches on Senior Day

RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University men's water polo faced a pair of squads on Saturday, hosting both #14 San Jose State and Cal State Fullerton at the Lancer Aquatics Center. Kevin Rosa's team faced the Spartans, a West Coast Conference foe, to start the day but fell to SJSU 16-13 after a 4-0 run in the third quarter lifted the Spartans to a win. First-year program Fullerton put up a valiant fight against the Lancers, but the match ultimately went the Lancer's way after a tight fourth quarter. The Lancers improved to an 18-17 overall record, going 3-3 in conference play.

GAME ONE: CBU 13 – SAN JOSE STATE 16

Battling for third place in the final WCC standings, the Lancers and Spartans were evenly matched from the start of the first quarter. San Jose struck first but was quickly met with a CBU goal to even the score. The first quarter ended 3-3, and the teams went right back at it in the second, but the Spartans pulled ahead with a 7-6 lead at the half.

San Jose took four goals to the Lancer's defense in the third quarter and went unanswered from CBU, earning an 11-6 lead heading into the final minutes of the match. Logan Puhl led the Lancers with five goals in the fourth to push CBU within reach of the lead, but another five goals from the Spartans sealed the win for the away team.

The Lancers outshot the Spartans 37-29 through the match, with Puhl leading the way with seven goals. Alex Righetti followed behind with a hat trick, and Caleb Teraoka led the team in assists with a pair. The Lancers ended the year in fourth in the WCC standings, with a conference record of 3-3.

GAME TWO: CBU 13 - FULLERTON 12

The second match of the day ended as in a win for the Lancers after they faced the Titans at home on Senior Night. California Baptist took off with an early lead, ending the first quarter 5-1. Thomas de Wit grabbed a pair of goals in the first half, extending the squad's lead to 7-4 at the half.

Entering the third quarter, the Titans slowly started to pull closer to the Lancers and added five goals, outscoring the Lancers in the quarter. Cameron Cullen and Ian Escoto added a goal each in the fourth quarter. Combined with two key saves from senior goalkeeper Trevor Benge, the trio ultimately gave way to a tight 13-12 win for CBU.

Five Lancers ended the day with a pair of goals against the Titans, and Benge totaled seven saves against Fullerton for the squad's 18^th win of the season.

CBU celebrated five Lancer seniors before the start of the match, including Toby Bumgardner, Olsen, de Wit, Cullen, Benge, and Escoto. California Baptist will now gear up for their first WCC Tournament appearance on Friday, November 17^th, in Malibu, California.
