RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University men's basketball team faced off against the Abilene Christian for the second time in program history and the first time in the CBU Events Center. The Wildcats were coming off back-to-back wins against Utah Tech and Seattle. The Lancers could not end their two-game slide as they fell to the Wildcats 87-71 as Abilene Christian shot 55% from the perimeter.
The loss plummets the Lancers to ninth in the resume standings as Abilene Christian vaults them with the win. CBU is 5-6 in conference play, as are the Wildcats.
In the first half, both teams started slow and did not score their opening field goals until the 16 and 15:34 marks, respectively. The offense would pick up dramatically as both teams would finish the inaugural period shooting over 50% from the perimeter. CBU shot 61% from the floor and held a narrow 39-38 lead at the half. Joe Quintana led the Lancers with 9 points off the bench, while Tim Ighoefe made all three of his shots for six points. As a team, the Lancers bench scored half the team's points with 20.
Abilene Christian came out on a 24-12 run in the second half to take a double-digit lead over the Lancers with 8:11 to go. The Wildcats kept their foot on the accelerator and won the game 87-71.
The Lancers shot 47% from the field for the game but could not get their perimeter shots to fall, as they were outscored by 15 in that department. Taran Armstrong, Riley Battin, and Reed Nottage all finished the night in double figures, with Taran leading the way with 14 on 6-10 shooting.
Next, the Lancers will have a one-game road trip to Orem to face the Utah Valley Wolverines on Wednesday, February 8th, at 5 p.m.
