Nacogdoches: Day One of the WAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships is in the books for California Baptist. The Lancers competed in a few preliminary races and a pair of finals in the men and women's 10K.
The day for CBU began with the men's 1500M preliminaries, where the men put forth an impressive performance. In the three heats, a CBU runner crossed the finish line first and had the three top times on the day. Valentin Soca, Matias Reynaga, and Arturs Medveds were the top finishers in the prelims, with Soca coming away with the top time at 3:44.03. Soca's time was the sixth fastest in program history, topping his previous high by 0.02 seconds. All three runners earned automatic qualifiers for the finals on Saturday.
On the women's side, in the 1500M preliminary, Mia Cabrera and Maelle Porcher both qualified for the finals. Porcher finished with the top time overall at 4:25.37, four seconds faster than her closest competitor. Her time placed her in the top 10 in program history, and was one second behind her previous best. Cabrera captured third in her heat and nabbed the final automatic qualifier in the women's 1500M. Cabrera finished overall in the prelims and will join Porcher in the finals on Saturday.
In the Men's 10K finals, Tyler Tickner earned a spot on the podium with a sixth-place finish, earning him an All-WAC Second Team nod. Tickner earned his first postseason honor as a Lancer and the first on the weekend for CBU.
On the women's side, a pair of Lancers were named to the All-WAC Second Team in Sylvia de la Pena and Marina Trave. De la Pena and Trave finished within five seconds of each other and earned seventh and eighth place, respectively.
Next, the Lancers will compete in the men and women's steeplechase and the women's 800M on day two of the WAC Championships.
