SACRAMENTO--- On day three of the NCAA West Regionals, the California Baptist University men's track team closed its season in the men's 5K. Two Lancer runners had top-10 finishes in their heat, and top-20 finishes overall.
Valentin Soca dealt with an illness and pain in his leg following the 10K on Wednesday night but still managed to pace the Lancer runners with a time of 13:47.22. His time was the sixth fastest in program history and was seven seconds off his personal best time of !3:30.68 that he set at the Bryan Clay Invitational.
Soca's spectacular freshman season ends with six top-5 finishes and three first-place finishes. Soca set the program records in the 1500M, 5K, and 10K with times of 3:42.09, 13:3068, and 28:34.34. Soca also was the WAC Champion in the 1.5K and was a finalist for male track athlete of the year.
Matias Reynaga came in right behind Soca in the 5K with a time of 13:48.56, good enough for tenth in his heat and 19th overall. Reynaga was four seconds off his personal best at the Stanford Invite, and the time was eighth best in the program record books.
Reynaga's season was highlighted by a first-place finish in the 10K at the Steve Scott Invitational and five top-10 finishes. Reynaga had a pair of second-place finishes in the WAC championships, garnering him a First-Team All-WAC award.
