RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University men's soccer announces its 2023 fall schedule, arguably its most challenging slate of the Division I era. The Lancers will start the season with a eight-game non-conference schedule that includes two NCAA Tournament teams and two regular season conference champions, preparing them for eight Western Athletic Conference games in October before the WAC tournament in November.
The Lancers open the season on the road with a pair of games against first-time opponents. The Lancers will open the 2023 season in Morgantown on August 24, taking on West Virginia. This Mountaineers team finished last season with the highest RPI ranking of all the CBU opponents this year, checking in with a ranking of 53. Three days later, CBU will head to Ann Arbor to face off against a Michigan team that finished low in the Big Ten standings, but still posted an RPI ranking of 68 out of 212 programs.
CBU will open their home schedule in September with a trio of games, beginning with a first-time opponent in Loyola Marymount on September 2. Next, on September 7, the Lancers will play host to Cal, the first Power Five opponent to visit the CBU Soccer Stadium. The stretch ends with a matchup against the reigning Big West regular season champions CSUN, on September 10.
The Lancers close out the non-conference slate with an away-home-away stint, first visiting another reigning conference champion, San Diego, who claimed both the WCC regular season and tournament crowns, reaching the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2014. CBU returns home to host UC Santa Barbara on September 19. The final non-conference contest of the season will be the Crosstown Showdown at UC Riverside as the two teams meet after both squads are coming off NCAA Tournament appearances after the Highlanders won the Big West Tournament in 2022, earning a match against Portland, losing the match to the Pilots, 2-1.
The conference schedule begins at home, hosting Grand Canyon on October 1. UTRGV, UNLV, and Utah Tech will also visit Riverside during the month, with October 22 against the Trailblazers serving as Senior Day. The Lancers will be on the road to face San Jose State, Seattle U, Utah Valley, and Air Force.
The 2023 WAC Tournament will be held in Las Vegas this year, hosted by affiliate member UNLV for the fourth time since the tournament began in 1996. It will be the same format, with the top six teams qualifying based on conference point accumulation, and is scheduled to be played on November 5, 8, and 11.
