RIVERSIDE - The California Baptist men's water polo team pushed their winning streak to four on Thursday after sweeping a split doubleheader against Biola and Concordia. The Lancers outlasted the Eagles in La Mirada, 10-8, to start the day and cruised to a dominant 20-5 victory in the home opener later that night. CBU now stands at 6-4 on the year, with the weekend off before their next tournament.
At the end of week three it's Logan Puhl leading the Lancers with 30 points, posting a balanced stat line of 15 goals and 15 assists. Caleb Teraoka is not far behind with 24 points while also leading the team with 18 steals. Jaedan Calder and Cameron Cullen both surpass the 20-point mark at this point in the season as well with 23 and 22, respectively. Trevor Benge has been a consistent presence in the cage, averaging 8.6 saves and nearly a steal per game.
#14 CBU 10 - Biola 8
This defensive battle started in favor of the Lancers, who owned a 3-1 advantage after the first period and just 4-3 going into halftime. The Eagles would tie it at 4-4 after the break and 5-5 before CBU would pull away with a 3-0 run. Biola would keep it close and score with 19 seconds left, but the game was decided by then.
In all, nine Lancers scored against Biola. Matt Olsen stood out on offense by notching two goals in the contest and drawing four exclusions during the game. Logan Puhl led the Lancers with four points (one goal, three assists) and through in an impressive trio of steals. Trevor Benge played the full 32 in the cage, stopping four shots and nabbing three steals.
#14 CBU 20 - Concordia 5
The Lancers quickly took away all doubt and most of the drama in this one by jumping out to a 6-0 lead before the Golden Eagles could find their first goal. They had built a 10-1 advantage going into halftime and led by as much as 16 with just a minute to go before CUI found a last-second goal to make it 20-5 before the final horn.
Marcus Lodewyk led all scorers with a hat trick, his first of the season, plus a pair of assists and three steals. Cameron Cullen, Bodhi Bowden, Collin White, and Toring Stanely all posted a pair of goals against CUI. Benge saw half-work in the day's second game, still making four saves in the first half in goal. Trevor Alamilo protected the net in the second half, making one stop and grabbing one steal.
CBU is off this weekend, resting up for the Overnight MPSF Invitational Tournament hosted by USC. The Lancers will play for games but only know their first opponent going into it, as results will determine the later matchups. California Baptist will take on #8 UC Davis on Friday, September 22nd, at 3:00 p.m.
