RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University wrestling team has released its schedule for the 2023-24 season.
The schedule is highlighted by six home duals, including a high-profile dual against the University of Iowa that will be staged in the Dale E. & Sarah Ann Fowler Events Center on Saturday, November 4th, at 6 p.m. The Iowa Hawkeyes were the #2 team in the nation a season ago and had six All-Americans.
The Lancers are entering their second full season as affiliate members of the BIG-12 conference and have eight conference duals slated on the schedule. The conference schedule includes road trips to the Dakotas to face North and South Dakota State, Colorado Springs to battle Air Force, and the season's final dual in Orem, Utah to take on the Wolverines of Utah Valley. The home conference duals include Wyoming, Northern Colorado, and Northern Iowa, with a special neutral site match against Iowa State to be played in Walnut, CA, on the campus of Mt. SAC.
On the non-conference side, the Lancers will face eight opponents, with three taking place in Riverside. The Iowa dual will open the season in the Events Center, and a double dual against Cal State Bakersfield and Hofstra will close the home schedule for CBU. Other matches include road duals at Northern Illinois, Southern Illinois, and Kent State.
Last season, CBU defeated Wyoming 22-10 in Laramie to claim their first-ever BIG 12 dual. The Lancers also defeated Vanguard and Cal State Bakersfield in duals. The win over the Roadrunners was the program's first-ever over the PAC-12 squad.
In 2022, CBU competed in the BIG 12 Tournament for the first time and had a pair of seeded wrestlers. Hunter Leake at 133lbs was #6, and Elijah Griffin at 125 lbs was #8. Griffin did not compete due to a broken leg. Griffin was the first Lancer ever to be named BIG 12 Wrestler of the Week and defeated four ranked wrestlers on the season. Griffin enters 2023 as the #28 ranked wrestler in the nation, according to Intermat, at 125 lbs, becoming the first CBU wrestler to be ranked in the national polls in the preseason.
