LOS ANGELES – The third game of the MPSF Invitational pitted California Baptist University against newly minted WCC foe Santa Clara. It was a tightly contested match, but the Broncos eventually claimed the win with a last-minute goal. The Lancers fall to 6-7 on the season, while Santa Clara improved to 6-4 after picking up a pair of wins on Saturday.
#19 SANTA CLARA 12 – #14 CBU 11
This game was tight for all 32 minutes. CBU led after the first 4-3, as Cameron Cullen, Bodhi Bowden, Toby Bumgardner, and Marcus Lodewyk all scored for the Lancers. The score would flip in the second as it was Santa Clara with the one-goal advantage after the second frame, sending the teams into halftime tied at seven apiece.
The teams manage just three goals between them in the third, Santa Clara being the squad to claim the advantage. Another two goals by the Broncos to open the fourth put them up by three with under five minutes to play. CBU would go on a 3-0 run to level the score at 11-all. Luck fell the way of Santa Clara, though, as they found the back of the net one more time with 36 seconds left to play to reach the winning scoreline.
Cullen posted a hat trick for the Lancers, with Bowden netting two and being the only other Lancer with multiple scores against SC. Trevor Benge played all 32 minutes between the pipes, stopping nine shots and nabbing one steal.
The Lancers weekend doesn't get any easier as they close out competition against #9 UC San Diego on Sunday. Game time is set for 10 a.m.
