Leake Claims a Match Win as the Lancers Battled #5 Iowa State at Mt. San Antonio College

WALNUT--- The California Baptist University wrestling team battled the fifth-ranked Iowa State Cyclones in a neutral site dual at Mt. San Antonio College, sponsored by the non-profit organization Beat the Streets.
The Lancers earned a match win in the 133lb weight class and were close in several other bouts but ultimately lost the dual 39-3 to the Cyclones. The dual marked the third straight season the Lancers and Cyclones have competed against one another and the first time they have done so in California.
The dual started in the 157lb weight class where Chaz Hallmark battled #18 Cody Chittum. Chittum was one of seven ranked Cyclone wrestlers to compete for Iowa State, including four in the top 10. Chittum and #4 David Carr started the Cylones out with 11 team points off a technical fall and pin.
Justin Phillips held a slim lead through most of his match as he battled #23 MJ Gaitan of Iowa State through three periods/ Gaitan was able to secure a late takedown and would hold on to ensure the decision.
The 125lb weight class was the match that many had their eyes on as it was the lone bout of the afternoon that featured ranked wrestlers on both sides, with #23 Kysen Terukina of Iowa State and #27 Elijah Grifin for the Lancers. Griffin defeated Terukina in Ames a season via decision en route to earning the BIG 12 Wrestler of the Week for the first time in his career. The match was entertaining as advertised, but Terukina escaped with the 4-2 decision to even the series with Griffin.
Hunter Leake was the story of the dual for CBU in the 133lb weight class as he secured the team's lone victory. Leake pinned Zach Redding in Ames last year for his first-ranked victory and made it 2-0 over the Cyclones with a 4-1 decision over Ethan Perryman. Leake is now 5-2 in duals with the victory.
The Cyclones would win the final two bouts via decision and technical fall to secure the 39-3 victory.
