RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University concluded its home week 2-0 after sweeping the Seattle U Redhawks on Saturday afternoon behind a well-balanced offensive attack and efficient hitting.
The win gives CBU a 3-7 record in conference play while dropping the Redhawks to the same record. In the confines of Riverside, the Lancers now boast a 3-2 mark within the Western Athletic Conference slate, with their only losses coming in five-set matches.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Redhawks captured the upper hand early in the proceedings and built their lead to as many as four at 13-9. CBU did not panic and rattled off five of the next six points heading into the media timeout. Out of the break, CBU would score on 11 of the next 17 rallies and take the 1-0 match lead. Seattle U would again kick off the scoring in the second frame and even build a 4-1 lead that the Lancers would swiftly erase. A 3-0 mid-set run from CBU would force the Redhawks to huddle up, and the home team would proceed to finish off Seattle to the tune of a 25-18 result.
The third set was a dominant showing from CBU's offense, with Nicole Mauser, Madison Gilliland, and Mia Jerue all recording multiple highlight-worthy kills. CBU built a six-point lead at 18-12 that would not be relinquished and would ride out the Redhawks for the 25-18 set win and 3-0 match victory. Reese Reed would earn herself a personal milestone in the waning points of the frame by posting her 1,000th career assist on a perfectly placed ball to Jerue. The sweep of the Redhawks was CBU's second in conference play and first in Van Dyne Gym this season.
STATISTICAL NOTABLES:
Kali Wolf led the way for CBU on the offensive end with 12 kills and a kill percentage of .429. Gilliland posted an incredible 1.000% hitting percentage by going 9-for-9 in the match and led the way with 3.5 blocks for the Lancers. Reed had another double-double, leading the team in both assists and digs.
NEXT: The Lancers will hit the road to take on the Tarleton Texans on Thursday, October 31, kicking off their final three-game road trip.
