LAS VEGAS - California Baptist University men's soccer extended its unbeaten streak against UNLV to five games on Sunday night, drawing against the Rebels 2-2 to earn another Western Athletic Conference table point. The result pushed CBU's record to 2-3-5 (1-0-1 WAC), which settles them just behind San Diego State, San Jose State, and Seattle U, who all won their second game this weekend to post six points in the league table, with CBU just behind with four. UNLV now stands at 3-6-1 (0-1-1 WAC) after opening weekend.
"I thought we started the game really well tonight, and there were some very positive individual performances," Head Coach Coe Michaelson complimented after the draw. He added, "There are some things we need to learn from and do better, but in the end, we can feel good about taking four points on the road to open conference play."
The Lancers jumped out to an early lead after pushing the pace to start the game. In just the 10th minute, Luis Borrero was surveying his options from inside the 18-yard box and found a streaking Andrew Lovell for a relatively easy goal near the far post.
The Rebels would not let up at all, continuing to push the issue and making Hugo Do Rego work all half long. They would finally break through and equalize in the 32nd minute, leading to a 1-1 tie at the break.
The Rebel's second goal in the 67th minute was a solid strike, but helped into the net mostly by an unfortunate late deflection off of a Lancer in the box, changing its trajectory and putting Do Rego in an impossible position for the save.
Following a pair of menacing corner kicks by the Lancers midway through the second half, CBU would tie the game back at 2-2 from an absolute missile strike from David Cordes well outside the 18-yard box. His first goal of the season turned out to be the difference between the Lancers coming home empty-handed.
The Rebels would threaten late, though; with less than a minute to go, UNLV would rip a shot that had incredible pace when Do Rego reached up and snatched it out of midflight, securing the draw for CBU.
CBU returns home for a single game next weekend as they host the newest WAC affiliate member, San Diego State. This will mark the first-ever regular-season meeting between these two squads. The Aztecs started WAC play this weekend with a pair of one-goal shutout wins at UNLV and Utah Tech.
