BETHLEHEM, PA--- The California Baptist University wrestling team concluded its weekend in Pennsylvania by competing in the prominent Journeyman Collegiate Classic on Sunday at Freedom High School in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
The Tournament featured numerous ranked programs and All-Americans at every weight class. The lineup of teams included #7 NC State, #19 Arizona State, #15 Rutgers, #17 Illinois, and #11 Cornell. The Lancers came away with three first-place winners and multiple top-three finishers.
The Tournament was a round-robin style bracket where each weight class was divided into several groups (A through H), which were then divided into two pools (unless the group is small enough, then everyone is in the same pool). The best records in each pool within the groups then wrestle for placements, while the single pool groups are awarded placements based on their records. This system benefits the teams and wrestlers by guaranteeing three or more matches per competitor against similar-caliber opponents.
In his first collegiate action, freshman Richard Murillo earned a major decision in his first bout en route to bringing home first place in his bracket. Murillo had pins in his final two matchups against wrestlers from Sacred Heart and Lock Haven. Daniel Manibog continued his stellar weekend by taking the top spot in his bracket at 157 lbs. Manibog won all four of his matches with two tech falls and a pair of major decisions. Carter Schmidt was the final first-place winner winning his bracket over a wrestler from LIU.
Paul Kelly, Mitchell Neiner, Eli Sheeren, and Drayden Morton all posted top-three finishes in their respective brackets, while Nathan Haas and Matthew Buck rounded out the day with top five spots.
NEXT: The Lancers will have some time off before hosting Air Force on Friday, November 22, at 6 PM in Van Dyne Gym.
