CBU Falls Narrowly to San Jose State in Regular Season Finale

SAN JOSE, CA--- The California Baptist University men's water polo team battled the San Jose State Spartans on Friday afternoon as the regular season concluded.
The Spartans and Lancers entered the match-up fighting for position in the West Coast Conference standings, and the Spartans 13-12 victory cemented them in the third spot, while CBU will be the fourth seed for the upcoming tournament. The Lancers finish the regular season 20-12 and 3-3 in WCC play. The 20 wins mark the fourth straight season the Lancers have posted at least 20 wins and its best winning percentage since 2022.
CBU came out firing on the Spartans and quickly collected a 3-0 lead in the opening period. The home team would push one through the back of the net in the final 25 seconds to get on the board, as CBU led 3-1 after eight minutes of action. SJSU got its offense humming in the second period, outscoring the Lancers 4-2 in the frame to knot the game at five goals apiece heading into halftime.
CBU would flex its offensive firepower in the third period, with Logan Puhl, Caleb Teraoka, Toring Stanley, Collin White, and Rafa Martinez all connecting on goals to take a narrow 10-9 lead into the final frame. One goal would be the difference in that game, with San Jose State putting up four goals compared to CBU's two to pull out the 13-12 victory in their home pool.
Stanley, Teraoka, Martinez, and Nuzzo all had two goals in the match, with Stanley leading the team in points by chipping a game-high four assists. In goal, William Whitstone recorded eight saves in the full 32 minutes of action.
NEXT: The Lancers will head to Stockton for the WCC Tournament, beginning on Friday, November 22.
