CLARION, PA--- The California Baptist University wrestling squad headed out east for a pair of duals this weekend, beginning with a tilt against Clarion University. The Lancers dominated the matchup, winning eight of the ten bouts to secure its first true road win of the season by a score of 32-7. The win moves CBU's record to 3-2 in duals on the season and keeps the Golden Eagles still in search of its first dual win this year.
The dual began at 165 lbs, with Drayden Morton facing off against Wesley Barnes. Morton wasted no time putting points up on the board for CBU and would earn the fall in under two minutes in the first period to give his team an early 6-0 lead. Carter Schmidt would add to the lead with a gritty victory at 174 lbs, which saw him and 2023 NCAA qualifier John Worthing tied heading into the final period. In the third period, Schmidt would earn a critical escape point and fend off multiple shots by Worthing, which resulted in the 5-4 decision going CBU's way. Nathan Haas would compound the lead for CBU at 184lbs with a 10-7 decision victory that saw Haas pick up two critical third-period takedowns to secure the win.
The Golden Eagles would get on the board at 197lbs with a riding time point that would give Ethan Wiant the 2-1 decision win over Eli Sheeren. Tristan Kemp would cancel out those points for Clarion at heavyweight with a clutch sequence in the third period. The West Virginia transfer would draw a stall call with under 30 seconds remaining to give himself the 2-1 lead and then secure a takedown with four nearfall points to give CBU a major decision and four more points on the scoreboard. Mitchell Neiiner and Jeremy Ginter Jr. would both secure decisions in the second half of the dual, while #33 Elijah Griffin and Paul Kelly would give CBU bonus points with a major decision and a fall, respectively. Clarion would take the victory at 133 lbs via a major decision to result in the final score of 32-7 in favor of the visitors.
