CBU Takes on UCR in Midweek Crosstown Showdown

RIVERSIDE - California Baptist University softball headed east to Amy S. Harrison Field on the UC Riverside campus for the 2024 version of the Crosstown Showdown. Despite scoring first, the Lancers would eventually fall to the Highlanders, 6-2.
The teams were scoreless through three innings, thanks partly to an excellent outfield assist from Sydney Soto to Valeria Alvarez that cut down a Highlander scoring opportunity at the plate.
CBU would open the scoring in the top of the fourth as a Merissa Borkowski sacrifice fly would bring in freshman third basemen Kate Penberthy to give the Lancers a 1-0 advantage. The Highlanders would respond quickly, plating three in the bottom half of the fourth and three more in the bottom of the sixth to take a significant lead into the final frame.
The Lancers would fight until the end, which is evident in Kayla Lyon's pinch-hit home run at the top of the seventh, but they couldn't string together enough to reclaim the lead. Morgan McConnell got the start on Tuesday, going three innings before Presley Hosick relieved her, and Jazmine Castaneda finished the game out for CBU.
CBU hosts its first of three non-conference tournaments this weekend, welcoming CSU Bakersfield, Utah State, and Weber State to Funk Stadium for ten games from Friday through Sunday afternoon.
