RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University wrestling team battled the #24 Cal Poly Mustangs in an in-state rivalry dual on Friday evening, with the visiting Mustangs coming away with the 32-3 victory.
The Mustangs won nine of the ten matches on the evening and featured five ranked wrestlers. Cal Poly, a PAC-12 affiliate for wrestling, came into the dual 5-5 after dropping its last three duals to ranked opposition. Meanwhile, the Lancers entered the dual 4-9, coming off a loss to #16 Northern Iowa. The dual was the seventh meeting of the two programs and the second since the two teams have both been DI programs.
The dual began at 125 lbs and started with the lone ranked matchup of the evening between #33 Dom Mendez and #24 Elijah Griffin. Griffin and Mendez battled it out through two and half periods, with the two wrestlers trading escapes. In the closing seconds of the period, Mendez grabbed hold of Griffin's right leg and circled to gain control, the three-point takedown, and the win.
The Mustangs would earn bonus points in two of the next four matches, including a technical fall for #9 Chance Lamer over Dayne Morton. The Mustangs would advance their lead to 15-3 through five matches. In the 165lb bout, Mateo De La Pena got the Lancers on the board with a 7-3 decision over Michael Goldfeder of Cal Poly. De La Pena recorded a pair of takedowns in the match and only allowed escape points to put three on the board for the home team. The dual win was De La Pena's fifth of the season.
The Lancers would lose three close decisions over the next three matches, including a 13-7 loss in the 184lb bout between true freshman Mahkyi Smith for CBU and Daniel Vizcarra of Cal Poly. The dual was the first for Smith in his freshman campaign, and he earned a pair of takedowns in the bout. #25 Trevor Tinker would finish the dual for Cal Poly with a technical fall as the Mustangs walked away with the 32-3 victory in Riverside.
