RIVERSIDE - After returning from five straight road games, the Lancers are now repping a five-game home win streak after downing Tarleton State 6-3 and 4-2 on Friday night. California Baptist softball is back on the right side of .500 at 19-18 overall and in sole possession of second place in the conference standings with a 6-3 Western Athletic Conference record.
Friday was highlighted by a pair of strong Lancer pitching efforts and an offensive coming-out party for Bobbiann Pratt. No saves were given out tonight as Presley Hosick and Morgan McConnell earned complete game wins against the Texans. Pratt, a junior transfer second baseman, went 4-6 with five RBI, two runs scored, and two doubles in her 13th and 14th starts of the year.
GAME ONE: CBU 6 - TSU 3
Friday's series opener started out in favor of TSU, who scored in the top of the first and limited CBU to just one hit in the second, third, and fourth innings. The Lancers leveled the score with intentional hitting and an old-school offensive approach. Pratt doubled with one out to get things going, her first extra-base hit of the season. She would be moved over on a Merissa Borkowski infield single and scored on a pinch-hit RBI sacrifice fly from Maya Avila.
The Texans would quickly regain the lead in the next half inning, scoring on a sac fly and a ground out with two outs. But the bottom of the fifth is where CBU really hit their groove. It started with a leadoff, first-pitch home run from Kalena Burns that would have dented Van Dyne Gym in the absence of the outfield netting.
After the four-bagger, five of the next six CBU at-bats would reach safely, including another Pratt double, scoring two, ultimately resulting in five runs in the inning.
Hosick would force a pop-up and a ground out for outs one and two, closing the game with her fifth strike out of the night for the third and final out of the seventh inning. Hosick is now 6-4 on the year.
GAME TWO: CBU 4 - TSU 2
The Lancers led game two wire-to-wire, opening the game with Burns scoring Borkowski on an infield single. TSU would score in the top of the second on a wild pitch, but CBU immediately countered with two singles to open the frame, scoring both Maya Martinez and Kate Penberthy on two more RBI for Pratt.
The Texans would make it interesting in the fifth by scoring a run to make it a 4-3 Lancer lead. It would take until the bottom of the six, but CBU would answer as, who else, Pratt singled to right center, scoring Matti Severns from second to give CBU room to reach the final out with a multi-run lead.
McConnell picked up win number six in the year, surpassing her win total from 2023, with almost half a season still to go. Friday's hurlers both currently rank in the WAC top-10 in ERA, opp. batting average, innings pitched, strikeouts, wins, saves, appearances, and starts.
With rain predicted for Saturday morning and afternoon, the start time of the series finale has been pushed back to 6:00 p.m. at Funk Stadium.
