CBU Completes Sweep of Tarleton With A Shutout In The Finale

RIVERSIDE - California Baptist softball saved their best effort of the week for last, run-ruling Tarleton State, 8-0, in five innings to secure the second conference series sweep of the year on Saturday night. The win pushes CBU's overall record to 20-18 while owning sole possession of second place in the Western Athletic Conference standings at 7-3.
CBU dominated both sides of the plate on Saturday, but senior starter Jazmine Castaneda shined extra bright for the Lancers on Saturday night. Jazzy improved her season record to 6-2 in 2024 with a complete game shutout, allowing just four hits in five innings. The Texans' four hits were mediocre at best as Castaneda held TSU leadoff hitters to 0-5 in the game and held the Texans hitless, 0-6, with runners on the basepath.
Offensively, Kayla Lyon and Kalena Burns were swinging hot from the jump, accounting for all seven Lancer RBI's on the night. Burns blasted the game open early with a three-run shot in the bottom of the first. Her sixth of the year ties the CBU single-season home run record with 16 games still to add to her total.
Lyon added two more extra-base hits to her impressive total tonight. First, she knocked her 14th double of the season at the bottom of the third, adding one Priscilla Estra run to the Lancer score line. She also hit her first career triple in the fourth, scoring Estrada again and Merissa Borkowski.
The game ended with a solid hit and some smart, heads-up base running. Kate Penberthy took a 1-2 pitch all the way down the left field line for a stand-up double, leading to Mike Smith seizing the opportunity to end this one early by putting a pinch runner on second, enter Matti Severns, the team leader in stolen bases. Maya Martinez sacrificed on the first pitch of the next at-bat, bunting Severns to third with ease. Although Ashlee Annett came in to likely sacrifice fly Severns home, there was no need for Annett to take the bat off her shoulder, and the moment forced the Texans pitcher to throw a wild pitch, scoring Severns easily to seal the result in favor of CBU.
The Lancers will take their newly minted three-game win streak on the road for the next two weeks for a pair of Beehive State series at Utah Valley (April 5 & 6) and Utah Tech (April 12 &13). However, before the Lancers leave the state, they will bus south to take on the University of San Diego Toreros. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. at USD Softball Complex.
