ARLINGTON, TX--- The Western Athletic Conference office announced the final standings of the 2023-2024 Commissioners Cup on Monday morning, which saw California Baptist earn a second-place finish with 129.4 points out of 11 institutions, marking the university's best finish during the last six years of eligibility for the cup and highest points total ever earned. Grand Canyon claimed its fourth consecutive title, and sixth in the last seven years. The Lancers finished 2022-23 season in eighth place, and had posted the previous best finish during the 2019-2020 season after CBU carded a third place standing.
The Lancers finished between cup champions Grand Canyon and third-place Utah Valley, both of which boasted phenomenal seasons of competition. The Lopes totaled 159.9 points behind several WAC Championships paired with a few NCAA Tournament runs during the athletic year, while the Wolverines snagged 116.5 points. GCU dominated on the women's sports front with 105.7 total points, distancing themselves from the rest of the conference by nearly 35 points. The Lancers checked in with 70.9 for women's sports but fared much closer on the men's side after staying within 17 points of the Lopes. CBU pulled out a pair of WAC championships from the men's cross country team and a tournament win by the men's soccer program, which went on to record California Baptist's first NCAA DI Tournament win. The Lancers also registered 90 points behind a successful winter season that saw women's basketball win the WAC Tournament, as CBU Aquatics placed third in the WAC Men's Swim and Dive Championships.
The WAC awards its Commissioner's Cup to the school that performs the best in a countable 14 of the conference's 20 men's and women's sponsored sports from an academic year. Points are awarded by aggregate scoring based on regular season and/or championship finishes, depending on the sport and the number of institutions that sponsor the sport. An institution that does not sponsor a specific sport does not receive any points.
