RIVERSIDE - California Baptist men's soccer hosted No. 21 University of San Diego on Monday night, dropping the rare Monday-night match by a score of 2-0. The 21st-ranked Toreros remain unbeaten this season as their record improves to 5-0-2 while CBU drops to 1-2-3.
"Tonight we were beaten by a better team, but as good as USD was, the goals against were self-inflicted. With that said, we have also played one of the most difficult schedules in the country," Head Coach Coe Michaelson stated after the match, referencing the Lancers 11th ranked strength of schedule in the nation. He added, "so, we need to be honest about how we can improve but also remain resilient because we are testing ourselves at an elite level."
On paper, the Toreros controlled the game from start to finish, outshooting CBU 19-4 overall, putting six on frame while holding the Lancers without a single shot on goal. USD also earned 10 corners to CBU's two. USD's goals were unceremonious for the Toreros as the first came early in the first half off a penalty kick, and the second was an unfortunate second-half own-goal from the Lancers.
The Lancers will look to bounce back on Friday night as they travel to Los Angeles to take on the Lions of Loyola Marymount at 7:00 p.m. at Sullivan Field on the LMU campus.
