RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University men's soccer traveled to Los Angeles on Friday night to take on the Lions of Loyola Marymount. After a physical 90 minutes, it was the home team who secured a 1-0 win, dropping CBU's record to 1-3-3 on the year while the Lions, who peaked at No. 11 in the polls earlier this season, now stand at 2-3-2.
"We are going through a difficult period, but when that happens the only answer is to pull together and focus on doing the little things well. We also need to keep our heads up, because no one is going to feel bad for us," remarked Head Coach Coe Michaelson after the match on Friday night. He added, "We will use the next few days to get better and then it's up to us to put in a performance on Wednesday that better represents who we are as a team."
The Lions managed to outshoot the Lancers 17-6 in the game and earned 11 corners to CBU's four. The game's lone goal came late in the first half as a corner kick in the 40th minute which pinballed around in the box for a few seconds before finding paydirt.
Despite conceding a goal, CBU goalkeeper Hugo Do Rego was stellar against the Lions. The first year keeper made a single-game, Division I record 12 saves against LMU, keeping his side in it until the very end. The sophomore now has 45 saves on the year, the most in the league so far this season.
The Lancers now prepare for the Riverside Derby as UC Riverside is set to visit CBU on Wednesday, September 25, at 7:00 p.m. The all-time record in this version of the Crosstown Showdown is 2-3-2, but CBU is unbeaten in the last three matches.
