Kelly Impresses as CBU Battles South Dakota State in Riverside

RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University wrestling team battled #14 South Dakota State at home on Thursday night in the team's first true home dual in two months.
Freshman phenom Paul Kelly continued his incredible true freshman season with another decision victory, but the Lancers would ultimately come up short to the Jackrabbits 38-3 in the conference dual.
The dual began at 157lbs, with the Jackrabbits striking first with a 7-2 decision win for #20 Cobe Siebrecht, putting three points on the board early for SDAK St. South Dakota State would tack on bonus points in the next four bouts to give themselves a commanding 21-0 lead on the Lancers. At heavyweight, Tristan Kemp put up a fierce battle against #28 Luka Rasmussen. Kemp would score two reversals on Rasmussen, keeping the ranked heavyweight on his heels in the early portion of the match. Rasmussen would pull away with a pair of takedowns and would eventually take the match 10-5 and give the Jackrabbits another three on the board.
South Dakota State would get more bonus points in two of the next three bouts to take full control of the dual. CBU would get on the board at 149lbs to close the dual with Kelly going up against Avery Allen. The two wrestlers nearly went scoreless through two periods of competition as the two competitors battled for control. With the clock winding down in the third period and the score knotted at one apiece, Kelly turned Allen and secured him for the takedown and would ride him out for the final five seconds to secure the 4-1 victory and move his dual record to an impressive 8-2 on the year.
