RIVERSIDE --- An 85th-minute corner kick netted the game-winning goal for Utah Tech, as the Trailblazers played spoiler to CBU's Senior Night celebration. The 2-1 final shakes up the current look of the WAC standings, as one week remains in the regular season.
CBU entered the match alone in first place with ten points. Utah Tech now holds the top spot in the standings as the win pushes them to 11 in conference action. The Trailblazers close out the regular season next weekend against in-state rival Utah Valley.
"Soccer can be a cruel game, but we have to take responsibility for what happened tonight and learn from it," said head coach Cor Michaelson. "For them to score on their one second half corner, while we got nothing from eight corners, is a credit to their execution and an indictment of our focus and quality in dead ball moments. I don't feel we played poorly, but when you go to sleep on set pieces and miss too many chances, you can get sucker punched, and that's what happened tonight."
The Lancers were the first to find the back of the net as sophomore Blake D'Agostino netted his tenth goal of the season. The goal was set up by a leading pass from Damian Arguello, who picked up the assist against his former team.
The equalizer came less than three minutes after D'Agostino's 18th-minute tally, as Anthony Godinez placed the ball beyond the goal line. The goal came off a corner kick by Jerod Allen that was then flicked to Godinez by Denilson Velasquez to set up the goal.
CBU had its fair share of looks on frame throughout the 90-minute affair. CBU fired off 22 shots with nine registering on frame. The Lancers also attempted 12 corner kicks, eight of which came in the second half.
A corner kick eventually netted the winning goal, but unfortunately for CBU, it came for the Trailblazers. Stetson Coy scored his first goal of the season in the 85th minute, a header off a Taylor Rogers corner kick.
Goalkeeper Hugo Do Rego concluded the match with two saves. His counterpart, Luca Campoli, finished with eight saves.
Sunday night was Senior Night in Riverside. Five seniors were honored before their final home regular-season match: Arguello, Karl Netzell, Adolfo Pino, Jan Quispel, and Kieran Robson. More opportunities will come to play in Riverside, as CBU is the host site for the upcoming WAC Tournament.
One match remains in the 2025 regular season for the Lancers, as CBU will travel south to San Diego to battle San Diego State. The Aztecs will be in action tomorrow night as they take on Utah Valley in a pivotal conference matchup. San Diego State sits on eight points, while Utah Valley enters with seven.
The season finale in San Diego is scheduled for 7 p.m.
