PALM SPRINGS, CA. --- It's time for the Lancers to pack their things and hit the road, as the first of six straight away from Riverside begins this week in Palm Springs. For the second consecutive season, the Lancers will compete in the Acrisure Series, as CBU will battle San Diego on Tuesday inside the Acrisure Arena.
The Lancers made their Acrisure Arena debut last season, finishing 1-1 in Palm Springs. Only one game awaits CBU this time around, as the Lancers' matchup with the Toreros jump-starts six consecutive games on the road.
CBU is off to a 5-0 start to the season, matching the best Division I start in program history. The 2021-22 Lancers also went 5-0, but they were unable to push the unbeaten streak to six, creating an opportunity at history for the Lancers on Tuesday.
The Lancers are coming off a 3-0 homestand, which began on Friday, November 14, against Western Illinois. The homestand continued with UC Riverside and the Crosstown Showdown on Tuesday, another win for the Lancers. CBU then wrapped up the homestand with a 72-59 victory over Grambling State on Friday night.
Through five contests, the Lancers are averaging 75.4 PPG and hold opponents to 62.2 PPG. CBU is shooting 44 percent from the field and is outrebounding opponents by an average of 15 boards per game.
Guard Dominique Daniels Jr., the WAC Preseason Player of the Year, is averaging 19.0 PPG through five contests. Daniels Jr. is shooting 43.6 percent from the field and is a perfect 18-for-18 at the charity stripe.
Martel Williams is also averaging double-figures, posting a 14.2 PPG average. Jonathan Griman (9.8) and Jayden Jackson (9.0) are next on the scoring charts. Thomas Ndong leads the team with 8.2 RPG, followed by Griman, who is pulling down seven boards a night.
The Toreros also took on UC Riverside and Grambling State last week, going .500 in those games to move their record to 3-2. USD beat Grambling on Tuesday, 78-68, and then fell to UCR on Friday night, 85-71.
Juanse Gorosito leads the Toreros with his 13.2 PPG, followed by Toneari Lane (11.8) and Ty-Laur Johnson (10.0). The Toreros average 76.6 PPG and are holding opponents to 71.4.
CBU and USD have squared off just once before, that coming inside San Diego's Jenny Craig Pavilion in 2022. The Lancers won that matchup, 76-73.
Following Tuesday's game in Palm Springs, the Lancers will leave the state for their next five games, beginning with a visit to Corvallis and Oregon State on Saturday. The road trip will also feature visits to Colorado, BYU, Utah, and Eastern Washington before the Lancers return to the Fowler Events Center on December 16.
