BAKERSFIELD, CA--- The California Baptist University wrestling team competed in the annual Roadrunner Open on Sunday, earning five placers and one champion in a solid day of wrestling.
CBU wrestled 13 over nine weight classes at the tournament and would come away with two podium finishers, including the champion at 141lbs in true freshman Richie Clementi.
Clementi was the story of the tournament for the Lancers, winning four straight matches to claim the title at 141lbs. Clementi began his run with a first-period 18-0 technical fall over Riley Lord of Cal Poly. In the semifinals, Clementi would upset #27 Nash Singleton of Oregon State via decision. Singleton, a 2025 PAC-12 Champion and NCAA qualifier, would have the early 6-1 lead, but Clementi would score seven points in the third period to force a sudden victory situation. Clementi would secure a takedown in sudden victory to pull off the upset and move on to the Championship match. In the finals, Clementi faced Aiden Simmons of Cal Poly and used a strong first period to take the match 9-2 via decision and claim the title.
At 184 lbs, David Alonso would bring home fourth place after going 3-2 in his bracket. Alonso posted wins over Wyatt Rewters of Embry-Riddle, Kelly Little of Cal Poly, and Ryan Clink of Cal Poly to earn his top-five spot. At Heavyweight, the Lancers would have two placers with both Caeden Olin and Hunter VanderHeiden earning spots in the top six. Olin and Vander Heiden faced each other in the consolation semifinals, with Olin claiming the win. Olin would move on to the third-place match while VanderHeiden would take fifth in the bracket.
In the third-place match, Olin would battle the #1 seed in the bracket, Antonio Ramos of Air Force. Olin and Ramos would compete to a 1-1 stalemate to force overtime. Neither wrestler would score in sudden victory, so the match would transition to tiebreakers. Olin would earn a quick escape point and then play solid defense to take home third with a 2-1 victory.
Damien Alvarez, Braden Priest, Luke James, and Kayden Cartee would all post multiple wins in the tournament, and true freshman Gabe Ramirez would finish 6th at 125lbs to close out the Roadrunner Open for CBU.
NEXT: The Lancers will take part in another tournament from December 5-6 at the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas, Nevada.
