RIVERSIDE --- The Lancers are 3-0 for the first time in their eight-year Division I tenure, and they will look to keep their unbeaten start alive with a visit to San Diego on Thursday. In their first visit to Torero Stadium since the 2023 NCAA Tournament, the Lancers will face one of the toughest tests on their preseason schedule.
CBU comes into Thursday having received votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches' Poll released Tuesday. The Lancers are third in the Far West Region.
The Lancers were victorious in their last time out, besting Cal Poly, 2-0, in their first-ever meeting with the Mustangs. Junior Drew Hardin started the scoring with a successful penalty attempt in the 19th minute. Sophomore Blake D'Agostino later gave CBU an insurance goal with his breakaway chance in the 73rd minute.
Goalkeeper Hugo Do Rego completed his sixth collegiate shutout with three saves.
The Toreros opened the season with a gauntlet schedule, as their first three matches pitted them against top 25 competition. USD opened with a 2-1 loss against No. 15 Duke, followed by a scoreless draw against No. 20 Furman. The Toreros picked up their first victory with a 2-1 finish at No. 21 Denver. Earlier this week, USD visited crosstown rival San Diego State and was victorious, 2-1.
Thursday's visit from the Lancers will be the 2025 home opener for USD. The Toreros finished 7-3-2 in matches at Torero Stadium a season ago. CBU last visited San Diego for the opening round of the 2023 NCAA Tournament, resulting in a win for CBU on penalty kicks (3-2).
USD has been led offensively by Simon Duus Muller this season. His two goals, both on penalty attempts, lead the squad. The Toreros were picked first in the WCC Preseason Coaches' Poll, while seniors Vicente Ayla, Cesar Bahena, Samy Kanaan, and Ethan Warne were selected to the WCC Preseason Team.
Following the visit to San Diego, the Lancers will return home on Monday, September 8, to host future Big West rival Cal State Fullerton. Tickets are on sale HERE.
Thursday's match in San Diego is scheduled for a 7 p.m. kickoff and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
